n original linocut, carved on lino and handprinted with oil-based ink on premium printmaking paper. Columbine is one of the stock character of Commedia dell’Arte- an early form of professional theatre, originated in 16th century Italy. Originally she was portrayed as a saucy and gossiping maid, Pierrot’s wife and Harlequin’s lover. She often carried a tambourine to ‘fend off amorous advances’ (an obvious choice of a weapon!)
