This listing is for a test print of "Slow and steady" - an original handprinted mezzotint of a little snail amongst the wild garlic. This print didn't make the edition as it printed lighter in tone than I wanted it to be.
Mezzotint is a printmaking technique invented in the 17th century. It involves indenting a surface of a copper plate by rocking it with a special toothed tool which creates lots and lots of tiny burrs that can hold a lot of ink. Then a tonal image is created by scraping off and burnishing the rough surface of a plate to various degrees of smoothness - the smoother the area the less ink it hold - the lighter it prints.
Printed on heavyweight paper Somerset Satin with oil-based ink using an etching press.
